Strathroy is the main town of Strathroy-Caradoc, about 35 km west of London along Highway 402 and Egremont Drive. It is a genuine market town with a Front Street core of two-storey brick storefronts and, behind it, streets of older homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s with steep roofs and plenty of chimneys.

Newer subdivisions on the north and east edges brought the standard bungalows and two-storeys of the 1990s and 2000s, many now due for their first replacement. Outside town the properties turn rural quickly, with farmhouses, barns and outbuildings that are natural candidates for metal roofing. Homes on the older streets often carry two layers of shingles and chimneys that need fresh flashing, while the 1990s subdivisions are mostly straightforward reshingles.

The weather here is open-country weather. Wind comes across the flat farmland with little to slow it, and winter snow tends to drift and load. Both are hard on aging shingles, and both are reasons metal roofs are popular in the area.
