About Dorchester
Dorchester is the largest community in the Municipality of Thames Centre, about 15 km east of London along Hamilton Road and Dorchester Road. The village grew up around the Mill Pond, and the older streets near it and the Dorchester Community Park still have the small homes and farmhouses of its earlier days.
Most of the housing, though, is newer. Dorchester has been one of the region's fastest-growing bedroom communities since the 1990s, and the subdivisions off Catherine Street and Hamilton Road are full of two-storey family homes, many of which are now reaching the 20 to 25 year mark where original builder-grade shingles wear out. The older homes near the pond are simpler roofs, though several have additions with low-slope sections that need membrane rather than shingles.
The village sits in open country, so wind and drifting snow are part of every winter, and the rural lots and farms just outside it see the same exposure. Metal roofing is a common choice on the outlying properties.
